(2000AD)
Requiem
for the Last and Lost by Simon Field
A story that's poetic with contrasts. The
fatalism, the hopelessness and the Judges... 2000AD is a story about hell and
hell is captured beautifully here.
(Arrested Development)
Three Unwise
Men and a Maeby by Misbegotten
No pairing - It's Christmas time at the Bluth Household and George Michael consults
some of the family members for an appropriate gift for his father. A seemingly
effortless comedy - funny and cute and rather gorgeous when it all comes together
at the end.
(Arrested Development)
Les Cousins
Dangereux by winter baby
George Michael Jnr/ Maeby - A short story about cousins and foreign films and
- oh you get the idea. Clever and cute and nails the point.
(Babylon 5)
All
Love is Unrequited by Sabine
From love to devotion to alcohol to everything
in between, Sabine never forgets that Lennier views things through an alien
screen. I'm particulary fond of her Marcus.
(Batman)
Legends of the Not Very Dark at all
Knight by Te
Xander Harris is the worst Robin ever. But that's okay, because Rupert Giles
isn't exactly the world's greatest Batman -- although Ethan has some rather
nifty ideas for his costumes. This is crackfic in the very best sense of the
world. Run, don't walk.
(Batman Beyond)
Know
Me Broken by Te
The thing is, we all know Batman even if
we don't know his various incarnations, so it's difficult not to be intrigued
with how fanfic authors play him. I have to admit to being in love with Te's
version: angry and bitter and carrying not just the weight of the world but
the weight of himself in it. This story has all the power of an epic in a short
space.
(Beauty and the Beast)
Passing
of a Winter Love by Sophia Jirafe
Sophia Jirafe is just one of these writers
that can be counted on to produce quality no matter what she turns her hand
to. There was more to this story, always has been, and I love that Sophia has
said what many of us always suspected. Sheer beauty.
(The Bill)
A
Crack in the Teacup by Baxter
This beautiful, moving fic brings back to life the unfairly killed-off relationship
of Craig and Luke. With a smidge of smut, a lot of humour and a nod to "The
Lovely Bones", Baxter has managed to write a legitimate gay couple in the
police force without cheese or cliches.
(The Hire (BMW films))
The
Girl by Miss Martin
Being the classy kind of car company that
they are, BMW hired a bunch of Hollywood's top directors to make a series of
short films as advertisements. Starring Clive Owen as The Driver, they
are seriously cool stuff, so it's kind of inevitable that fanfic would follow.
This short piece perfectly captures the moods and themes of the movies themselves.
(The Hire (BMW Films))
Distance
by winter baby
A sad and lovely story that evokes the style
of the films.
(The Breakfast
Club)
The Supper
Club by Kaneko
Bender/Andy - Many years later two very unlikely aquaintances get together.
Written with a wonderfully spare style and endearing dialogue. A very credible
future for these guys.
(Carnivale)
Hand
of God by Jayne Leitch
Oh, so very clever. The way the story's pace
*builds* is just perfect. I'm a little surprised the Carnivale team didn't think
of this but then again I don't believe they could have done it with quite the
delicious subtlety.
(Casablanca)
Brazzaville
by the_star_fish
Oh, the absolute perfect epilogue to Casablanca, with such a spot on Louis voice
that I could practically hear Claude Rains telling me this story. Wonderful.
(Casablanca)
Nom de Coeur by Dorinda
Ooh, this was good. Understated, long, slow, unfolding in its own time, keeping
me glued to the screen to find out where it was going. Lovely Louis characterization
and a nice Rick voice.
(Charmed)
Sleight
of Hand by Juanita Dark
Dark and mysterious. A story that says much
about the division between innoncence and experience. A deft touch.
(The Chronicles
of Narnia)
Growing
Up by sheldrake
There aren't superlatives enough for this story. Lucy and Susan, and different
ways of growing up, and sisters - oh, anyone who has a sister, who is a sister,
should totally read this and recognize themselves in it. Sharp and bittersweet
and true, like the best stories always are.
(Dangerous Liaisons)
Gold,
Steel, Light and Diamonds by azrhiaz
The Marquise de Merteuil plays a game with Madame de Tourvel. I think I held
my breath through this entire story. Utterly fabulous - delicate and intricate,
sharp and cruel and deceptively truthful like the Marquise herself. Wonderful.
(Daria)
Glue Gun
by Krabapple
Daria/Jane - Sweet, funny and clever. Read it for the fast talking, wise-cracking,
razor sharp dialogue.
(Dark Angel)
If
Scheherezade by Pooh_Bah
Have you ever encountered on of
those fics that takes a one-off character and creates a legend? This is
one of those. Here Pooh_Bah takes Ben - the X5 gone mad and leads the reader
into his descent. It's a startling interpretation of the x5s and the relationships
formed in such circumstances, and it's written in a captivating second
person. Be sure to look out for more from this author.
(Dilbert)
These
Walls are Paper Thin by Liberty Ginger
It's Dilbert! It's Dilbert slash! And you
swore it couldn't be done - but here's it's done with credibility and integrity.
Check it out.
(Dracula)
Sea of Wonders
by Sophia Jirafe
Dracula/Jonathan Harker - Dracula can not have what he truly want. A beautiful,
sad and dark story. Sophia Jirafe sets up an incredibly powerful mood in the
opening scene that lingers throughout the story.
(Earthsea)
Even
Beyond All Other Lands by Bounce
Perfectly in character, this is an exquisite
piece of writing that really captures Lebannen's longing for Ged. All beta bias
aside, I really think this is a lovely fic.
(Earthsea)
Seasons
in the Archipelago by serenissima
Beautiful Ged/Tenar fic with a spot-on Tenar voice. It's a lovely, sad and true
meditation on love and change and growing old, and I love it SO MUCH.
(Earthsea)
Sparkweed
by McTabby
A tense moment between Ged and Jasper that feels as if it could slot right into
the books, with Ged's confusion and hatred and Jasper's scorn and arrogance
perfectly realized.
(The End of the Affair)
Apologetics
by Mosca
Based more on the movie rather than the book,
this is a very, very plausible (actually I'm pretty sure this is EXACTLY what
happened) epilogue to the story. Written in a way that totally keeps within
the feel of the characters and the movie.
(Ethan of Athos)
Love Among
Men by TeaRoses
Terrence/Ethan - A story that draws a stark comparison between the complexity
of society and the simplicity of a love between two people and their desire
for the future. A very appealing end story for both characters.
(Everwood)
And
you know that love is not enough by BJ
This is exactly the story I was hoping would
come out of this year's Everwood. Bright is sharper here than we usually
give him credit for, but still his loveable self.
(Everwood)
Time
for Other Things by Jintian
Amy isn't usually the character
for whom I watch the show, but the damaged, haunted Amy in this story just
broke my heart. It's beautifully-written and unspeakably sad.
(Everwood)
Whilst
This Wheel by bj
Everwood writers tend to (understandably)
gravitate towards Colin/Ephram, but I've got a soft spot for well-written
Bright and this fits that bill quite perfectly. Go, read, and encourage
bj to keep it up.
(Everwood)
Over
by Synchronik
Okay, it's fluff, but the dialogue
between Colin and Ephram is realistically rendered, and it'll soothe your
nerves and leave you with a smile on your face.
(Fables)
A
Sorta Fairytale by Sascha
Firstly, this fic has the perfect
title. (And not just because it's from a Tori Amos song.) Rarely
can you combine the ideal title and setting, but the fairytale-inspired
Fables universe presented the perfect opportunity. Secondly, it's
a great fic, a lovely vignette which captures the mood and style of the
comics very nicely.
(Fables)
What
Is, What Was by Sascha
Sascha has a lovely way with the Fables universe,
and this is a tale of the London fables, celebrating Remembrance Day far away
from the glamour and politics of Fabletown, New York. Bruin might not
be a quick thinker, but he recognises some of the truths that others miss.
(Ferris Bueller's
Day Off)
skip
by jamjar
Oh, Cameron. This story gets him, and the push-pull of his relationship with
Ferris (who really is a bit of a tool, and the story doesn't shy away from that)
and why they're best friends and possibly more. FABulous.
(Fire from Heaven)
Out
of the Pressing Crowd by Destina
Missing scene from the book that perfectly captures the boyish love and longing
between Alexander and Hephaistion, and is utterly hot, besides. The language
is lovely and lyrical and the emotions are handled deftly. And did I mention
the hot?
(Futurama)
The
Delivery Boy at the End of the World by Ijemanja
Fry/Leela - Fry, Fry, Fry... I love the way this story captures the essential
Fry - not a complete dufus but not exactly Valentino either. He's really an
option best left for the end of the world but it won't be so bad when it happens.
(Galaxy Quest)
Artificial
Devotion by Katie M
The story of Tawny Madison. A story that makes you go, "Wow. That is wicked
clever!" The whole fanfic on a medium within a medium thing might do your
head in but it's fun having your brain explode once in a while.
(Ghost World)
Missives
by Jacito
This another gem from the femslash challenge.
Like the movie, it's offbeat and hard to pin down, but beautiful nonetheless.
(Ginger Snaps)
Empty
Nest by Northlight
Most Ginger Snaps fic I've read so far (and
they are sadly too far and few between for my liking) have been told from the
girls’ POV. Northlight tells the story from Pam's POV, and makes you believe
in her fierce love for her daughters in all its terrible beauty.
(Gladiator)
Blood
and Wine by Ghani Blue
A nice vignette with beautiful descriptions
interwoven with obvious madness, tempered with jealousy.
(Gladiator)
Galatea
by Drowned Girl Fuschia
A dark encounter between Lucilla
and Commodus. Lucilla's fear and apprehension is well conveyed, as is Commodus'
attraction and love for his sister.
(Gladiator)
Remind
Him By Zara Hemla
An extremely atmospheric fic, with perfect
characterizations of Lucilla, Maximus, Commodus, and Marcus Aurelias. The tension
in the piece is very well written.
(Good Will Hunting)
Shelf
Life (The Go West Young Man Two Step) by Nifra Idril
From the summary to the last line, I adore this fic. Nifra has drawn Chuckie
so well, and Chuckie draws Will beautifully in everything he says and doesn't
say, and does and doesn't do. Just fabulous in every way - voice, characterization,
emotion - all working together to tell a story that moves me.
(Gray's Anatomy)
Just
a Daisy in the Shadow of the Sun by Nichole
George is infatuated with Meredith, but he learns to see what's right in front
of him eventually. Beautifully written, as all her fic is, this story totally
hits my bulletproof kink with stoical pining, unrequited love turning requited,
and who doesn't love George/Izzie? Really, Meredith in no way deserves George.
(Homicide: Life
on the Street)
The
Lovesong Of by k.
k. totally gets Munch's voice down here. Munch is missing Baltimore, but mostly
he's missing Kay, and he finally decides to do something about it, because he's
getting older, and he doesn't want any more chances to pass him by. Lovely.
(Homicide: Life
on the Street)
three thousand

Lovely look at Kay Howard and what made her the woman she is.
(House)

Great genfic that gives us an early look at House and Cuddy.
(The Iliad)

Warm and tender - you can really feel the affection between Achilles and Patroclus
here - and the last line is a kick in the gut.
(The Iliad)

Spectacular, sharp, beautiful and painful Achilles/Patroclus fic.
(The Iliad)
a

Exceptionally hot and lyrical Achilles/Patroclus, edged with wistfulness.
(JAG)

Nice - in a "Mmmmmmm nice" way.
Full of a dirtier, darker Mac/ Harm UST than the show would ever portray
but much more delicious (and perhaps more convincing as well).
(JAG)
Cut,
Clarity, Carat by not jenny
NJ works gold with everything she touches
so it's no surprise that her JAG fic is just what the military needs. This is
Mac/Webb and that's a pairing you probably didn't think too hard about, but
well worth it when you do.
(JAG)
Hallmark Moments
by Aerogirl
Aerogirl manages to turn some of those sappy Hallmark cards into a genuinely
feel-good fluffy story.
(Lamb)

by movies_michelle
Josh is back, and he's taking Biff to Disney World. Pitch-perfect voice and
tone, funny and wistful at the same time.
(Little Women)
Set Thine Heart
Toward the Highway by elynross
Laurie has doubts about his marriage, Amy knows eavesdroppers never hear well
of themselves, and Jo and her Professor prove to be exceptionally well-matched
after all. I admit to being a diehard Jo/Laurie shipper, but this story just
*completely* captures the tone of the books and the characters' voices, and
could so easily be a missing chapter that I'm stunned. Just amazing.
(Lost)
Next
Time, We Go to Disney World by Trollprincess
I'm afraid to say too much about the story, because it's a mystery crossover
and you should go into it unspoiled. Suffice it to say, it's delightful, with
dialog that pops and sparkles.
(Lost)
Making Nice
by shrift
Shrift writes some of the funniest, smartest dialog in all of fandom, and she
ain't that bad at writing smut either. Sayid/Sawyer, and I swear, I can hear
these two saying shrift's dialog aloud in my head, and next time they're on
my screen, I'm gonna start *seeing* them having teh hot sex. Yowza.
(Lost)
Under the Twinkling
of a Fading Star by Rheanna
"Lost" is still a young show, but Rheanna takes a sure hand in crafting
this sleek mind-bender of a speculative fic. And it's a stealth crossover, too!
What a neat story.
(Lucifer)
An
Invention, in Parts by The Grynne
Sharp, smart evocation of Mazikeen.
(Lucifer)
Thursday's Child
by Shrift
Brilliant look at what it must be like to be Elaine Belloc - strange and wonderful
and a little bit scary. I also like how the implications of her infatuation
with Lucifer are referenced obliquely.
(Mary Russell)
Mentor
by Professor Pangaea
A lost scene from The Beekeeper's Apprentice, that casts new light both
on that book, and the original Holmes canon. Mentors, fathers and the victims
they leave behind.
(M*A*S*H)
Perfectly
Normal by Malograntum Vitiorum
Trapper and the other denizens of the 4077th attempt to prank Hawkeye. Hilarious
and in character. Keep an eye out for Hawkeye's imaginary conversation with
Sidney, which made me gleefully happy.
(M*A*S*H)
So
Much for the Afterglow by Kyra Kullinan
So Hawkeye, so MASH. I love these 'after
the war' stories because we always wanted to know how they got on at home. And
I guess it was like this.
(M*A*S*H)
Like Soldiers Do by Nostalgia
Hawkeye fic. What else? - This is so funny and so clever I read it again just
now. For fun. And a little surprising (or not) that we didn't see someone attempt
this in the show. I mean, Klinger was wearing a dress - why didn't he think
to take that scenario to its logical conclusion? A little echo of the show that's
very, very welcome.
(Master & Commander)
Sounding
by hossgal
A wonderful bit of character exploration
that feels as if it could be slotted right into the movie. Aubrey's dreams take
him somewhere he'd never go in daylight, and hossgal gets his character *down*.
The use of language is lovely and sensual; we drown with Jack as he sinks beneath
the surface.
(Master & Commander)
The
World Turned Upside Down by shalott
This story? Left me speechless,
gasping and chortling with delight. Given its insane premise, the story
should never have worked…but it does, and how! Think of it as a gloriously
genderfucked Austen romance, but with O’Brian’s heroes remaining in perfect
character. Truly, one of its kind.
(Minority Report)

Perfect evocation of what must be going on

(Monk)

It's an

(Much Ado About

Bedfellows
by Ijemanja
Hero/Beatrice - From the play: "I have this twelvemonth been her bedfellow"
and who knows you better than your bedfellow? Very Shakespearian with the word-play
and the innuendo. Shines a whole new light on the play and especially the character
of Beatrice.
(Multifandom)
Mood
Vignettes by Ellen M
I love this girl, I really do. If you
want to see how every sentence she writes cuts directly to the heart of things,
look no further. through each fandom and each radically difficult
character she manages to maintain a fragile, beautiful core.
Almost all of these are excellent, although my personal favorites are
the Pretender vignettes, Someone else's nightmare, and The Book when he wrote
it.
(Multifandom)
Elves!
Elves! Elves! by various
I must be out of touch with fandom, for I've
never once seen a story where a character is seriously outed as an elf.
(Always had doubts about Kes, but then, who hasn't? And you can't tell
me that Neelix isn't a leprechaun ... hmm.) Seen lots of complaints about
them, yeah, but never read an actual fic. Which is a pity, because if
I were more in tune with the cool kids and the cliches they hate, then maybe
I could have contributed something to this amazing project. Pick a fandom,
any fandom. Pick a character, any character. Make them an elf.
Watch the wacky fun begin. The West Wing entry is particularly
brilliant.
(My Own Private

Mike/Scott - A story that captures everything that is sad and desperate about
the characters in the movie. This story also provides an ending that you didn't

(Nero Wolfe)
Closeted
by m_butterfly
This story is incredibly spot-on in terms of both characterization and narrative
voice. First person is *so* hard to do well (I tend not to read fic in first
person, myself), even if (perhaps especially if) the source material itself
is in first person. But this... this could have been straight (heh) out of one
of the books - that's how well the author nails Archie here. And it was hot,
too. *g* Wonderful work. (Archie Goodwin/Saul Panzer)
(Northern Exposure)
Paradise...Not

(The Odyssey)

Odysseus and Athena: a man and his goddess.

(Real Person Fic:

Black
and White, Still by Jane St Clair
So ... Peter O'Toole. And Leni Reifenstahl. The pairing is from a challenge;
it shouldn't make as much sense as this. Jane captures personalities and places
with a few deft words, and it's almost shocking in its plausibility.
(Real Person Fic:
Canadian Idol)
Camp by Jane
St Clair
I know, I know, two consecutive Jane St Clair recs. But when you come face to
face with genius, how can you choose? Kalan/Jacob is all kinds of wrong, but
also all kinds of right, and Jane has caught those fleeting moments when you
hover on the cusp of something bigger, and find that you're not alone. Plus,
boys acting like boys. Even if you're not familiar with Canadian Idol, I do
strongly recommend this, for the sheer joy of it.
(Remington Steele)
Put
the Blame on Steele by Yahtzee
Movie buff Steele tries to figure out which

story all around. The movie references, especially, as Steele acts as casting
director make the story.
(Romeo & Juliet)
Waste
Our Lights in Vain by Nifra Idril
There is a door inside Mercutio, in the shape of Romeo. This story gives voice
to his longing. It blows with the wind; open and shut, open and shut. Lovely,
haunting fic with some evocative language and imagery. The result is thick with
dreamy, languid despair.
(Sandman)

(Sandman)
Alike

(Sex and the City)
All the Smiles

Miranda, no pairing - Miranda runs the New York marathon. A simple story where
the effect lies in the simplicity of a story about personal achievement - and
the way it's never real until you tell your friends.
(Sex and the City)
The Good that

Samantha, no pairing - Sad in that good way because you know this is inevitable
and it will end like this eventually. I like the focus on Samantha as the one
who gets left out in the end and the way she clings to Miranda, the other one
that's left.
(Singin' in the

And Write

Threesomes seem to be rather in fad these days, but this gorgeous story set
the bar really high. This is about Don/Kathy/Cosmo and the relationship that

and kept me on the edge of my seat - the language is beautiful, the emotions
true, the sense of time and place palpable. Utterly compelling and wondrous

but this... this may be one of the best pieces of writing I've run across in

Brenda and Lisa and that massage. A scenario so *easy* to imagine that it's

I was so impressed by this story
I had to get a copy of Transmetropolitan - now I think I might be a fan.

Julie writes Tony and Carol as if they were her very own. The dialogue and plot

A joy from start to finish.
(Without a Trace)

A set of 16 smaller drabbles that build and
build until the end feels like a release. This has all of the angst and
bittersweet regret that a good Jack/Samantha story needs and then some.

I love the tension in this piece -- work, friendship turning into something
more -- as Sam and Martin spend some time in a bar.

Great, great Jaye voice, with some outstanding, spot-on snark, the kind where
you can hear the characters saying the dialog aloud. A delight from start to
finish.

OK, this is a tiny snippet made up of mostly dialog, but the voices are spot-on
perfect and the whole thing killed me with the cute. Plus, zombies!
