Farscape
Bellum
Interruptum by Cofax
"Of all the gin joints in all the universe..." At least one fannish
reworking of Casablanca per fandom seems to be de rigueur, but I'd dare say
Rick has rarely been as compelling and vital as when he was called John Crichton.
This story is sharp and clever, with brilliant casting of the Farscape characters
into the familiar roles.
Strength
by Sophia Jirafe
Crais is criminally under-used and abused in fanfic, and
Sophia takes a step against that here, in her perfectly plausible description
of Crais's mental state during season three.
Contrary
by Andraste
The distance and chill of Andraste's prose fits perfectly
with a Scorpius point of view. She also puts a spin on things, by choosing
to write about Farscape's most beloved villain in terms of virtues.
Abbott
and Costello Meet the Rainbow Coalition by Shrift
Shrift understands that you don't write John and D'Argo:
you listen for them. The dialogue in this is spot-on and hilarious.
There's enough angst in this fandom, sometimes it's nice to have a little drunken
fun.
Hinterlands
by Shaye
A surprising and unsurprisingly gorgeous look at a possible
Aeryn/D’Argo relationship. It plays with the Farscape ideas about home, and
finding happiness, possibly more than the characters deserve, in unexpected
places.
Sea
Change by Thea
One possibility post 422. This particular ending has a
soothing touch to it, with just the right amount of bittersweet regret.
Paper
Moon by Andraste
A twisted look inside the head of one of the show’s most
twisted characters. The atmosphere is perfectly creepy and surreal, as all good
Harvey stories should be.
Johnny
on the Spot by Feldman
A sizzling look at John, Chiana, and that porn blob from
John Quixote. The pain is exquisite, the writing is sharp, and the smut
is smoking.
Five
Things that Never Happened to Aeryn Sun by Cofax
This challenge is perfect for this fandom, and Cofax takes
full advantage of it. A fascinating look at five things that never happened,
but could have.
Answer
of the Moment by Elishavah
A strong Sikozu voice and lovely, layered writing combine
to create a future that I’d love to see explored a little more. John/Sikozu
has never made more sense.
Home
Fires Burning by Shaye
Shaye fills in the holes of Sikozu’s past here, with her
usual skill and knack for the characters. If it’s not canon, it should
be.
Reflections
in a Stolen "I" by Fialka
Fialka twists away from canon following Bringing Home the
Beacon in this tale of multiple Aeryns and time-travel. I wouldn't be
surprised if this ended up being more satisfying and better-written than whatever
solution the show comes up with.
The
Money-Changer's Tale by Cofax
Cofax plays with perspective and style in this dark romp
of a story. Nicely done.
Give
a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe by David
Hearne
Considering how funny it can be, the Farscape fandom is
lacking in comic stories and this one fills that hole quite nicely. Just make
sure you're not drinking anything.
Golden
Apples by Betan Survey
Solid characterization, ass-kicking, an interesting original
species, and prose that carries you swiftly through the story; what more
could you possibly want? It's fun, Farscape style.
A
Whiter Shade by Shaye
So beautiful, so surreal, so haunting! This story is told
backwards and, hence, unfolds in a manner that is strange and disturbing and
so very Farscape. An incredible pleasure to read. And something that stays with
you for so long afterwards.
Rain
by Fialka
It's romance, but a little romance can do a body good,
especially when it's as beautifully written as this is. It's as comforting
as a big cup of hot chocolate, and yet there's that twinge of pain for
what you know lies in their future.
Memento
Mori by Kixxa
A very cool idea executed nicely by Kixxa. It may
be an AU, it never feels out of character or forced, which is an impressive
achievement.
Essential
Ingredients by Anna S.
A short Noranti-fic that gives much-needed insights to
this most enigmatic of characters.
Search
for Signs in the Dark by Jintian
An oh-so-plausible missing scene from "Hidden Memory".
Stark with depth and John with strength, putting his splintered self back together.
Finer
by Fialka
Another top-notch story that deals with the consequences
of Unrealized Reality. Fialka is a beautiful writer and has a fine touch
with all of the characters.
Cognitive
Dissonance by Cofax
Cofax nails Sikozu in this. Her voice, her past,
what she wants, and what she's getting wrong, everything's exactly right.
In
the Company of Ghosts Part One: The Aerodynamics of Moving Bodies by Kodiakke
Max
This story is the literary equivalent of dropping canon
on its head, just to see how a few dents might change everything. It should
be boring and one-dimensional, but it's written with such intensity, technical
knowledge, and attention to detail that it quicky establishes itself as the
ultimate what if story. I present to you a broken John Crichton trying
to find what he doesn't know he's lost and an Aeryn unlike any we've ever seen.
Simply frelling brilliant.
Written
on a Thumbnail by Cofax
It takes a brave writer to place the two Johns together,
but it takes a great writer to do that and then take it one step farther.
Lucky for us, Cofax is both. This novella's got it all: John, Aeryn,
Harvey, explosions, humor, Scorpy, torture, and an ending that somehow strikes
a balance between all of these opposing elements.
Word/Hard
by Makiko
As usual Makiko dances on the furthest edge of characterization,
but she does it with such sharpness and intelligence that we can't help
following. It's an Aeryn we rarely see in fanfic,
all hard lines, punches, and alien roots and it's not to be missed.
The
Archeology of Memory by Shaye
Interesting spin on the usual DWTB baby scenario here,
combining sharp characterization and a lines that make you ache. Shaye also
manages to use omnscient POV to the story's advantage, which is a major accomplishment
in and of itself.
After
Never Too Late by Sunshiner
Yet another post DWTB, only this one has a memorable original
character, a very Farscapian plot, and some excellent Harvey bits. Nice
job.
Space
Between by KodiakkeMax
Chiana, stripped down to her bone. Raw and beautiful with
a prose that bleeds.
Light
of Delvia by Cofax
Even if Cofax didn't have a lovely writing style and a
great handle on Zhaan's voice, I would enjoy this early season piece for its
foreshadowing. As it is, I can love it for all three.
Foolish
Girl by Shaye
If you're searching for an example of a story that gives
a secondary character depth and a backstory beyond what canon provides, look
no further. With her usual style, Shaye puts a fascinating, dark twist
on a mostly forgotten character.
From
the Light, Darkness by Deneba
This is not for the soft of heart or for fans looking for
a pick-me-up. Nevertheless, the angst isn't gratuitous and even through
a prism of darkness, Deneba keeps the characters sounding like themselves with
a smooth, thoughtful style.
Buckshot
by Feldman
Tiny and excellent. A perfect summation of the first three
seasons, with exactly the right amount of pain humming underneath the surface.
Convergence
by Shrift
John/Chiana's been explored in a number of ways by a number
of very, skilled writers recently, but I think this one's my favorite. Shrift's
Crichton voice is very in character and you never wonder for a second why John
would fall for Chiana, she's so flawed and loveable.
I
Believe in Ghosts by Makiko
Elusive and beautiful. I don't always agree with
Makiko, but anything she writes is worth reading.
Sickness
of Shadows by Cretkid
An examination of the crew of Moya through Pilot's eyes.
It's always nice to see new writers in a small fandom, and doubly so when they
take the time to shed a little light on a relationship that's usually forgotten
by both the show and fanfic.
More please.
Please
Hold Tightly by Maayan
Normally just the thought of John/John slash would have me running for the hills,
but it's Maayan, so she makes it work. Not for the faint of heart or the easily
squicked.
Sleep
While I Drive by Maayan
It's Maayan again, but this time she turns her keyboard towards Aeryn and writes
an Aeryn who's superior in many ways to the character we're given by the show.
Just don't believe the summary.
Black
(Ghosts) by Maayan
At some point, I think I'm going to run out of words to describe this writer's
talent. She lets all the characters fall to their lowest points,
but it never feels unbearable or unrealistic. This is a gorgeous, angsty story
with lines that linger in your brain for a long time afterwards.
Kansas
by Maayan
A fascinating look at a potential future, with an interesting mixture of the
mundane and the fantastic. There are lots of adjectives I could use to describe
this story and Maayan's talent, but I think I'll just say she's pyschic and
leave it at that.
