iStalk: Doctor Who recs
New-school, old-school, shippy, gen, cracksome; I am flexible like Captain Jack.

No Sleepers Must Sleep by Mercurial Wit
Chilling, insightful Lucy Saxon fic.  Fandom was rather overrun by Saxon/Lucy fics in the wake of the finale, but this is one of the best.

Progression (we write stories that aren't fairytales) by AzureDamsel
Martha never pictured herself as Prince Charming, but even the Doctor needs saving once in a while. A lovely Martha fic that covers her childhood through to "The Sound of Drums".

The Bits With Daleks by Nina
Romana has trouble putting the events on Skaro behind her.  Short, but pointed.

As Ordinary Things Often Do by Doyle
Okay, so Benton and Harry Sullivan, through a series of events that are entirely Torchwood's fault, end up in the company of Rose Tyler and Martha Jones.  Who have the TARDIS, K9 and are out to save the universe, what with the Doctor being otherwise engaged.  And if that's not enough to get you reading, it also has great dialogue, a lovely running gag about UNIT dating, and a brilliant twist at the end.

I Entirely Care About You by JennyO
A moment from "Blink".  Martha is tired of just playing at domestic; the Doctor has his own reasons for keeping a distance.

Mr and Mrs Smith (go to Lyrae) by SignificantOwl
Takes that old cliche, "pretending to be a couple" , and turns it into a funny, well-written romp.

Martha Jones, Angel of Death! by Calapine
The Black Guardian hires the late Adeola, disguises her as her identical cousin Martha Jones, and sends her off to kill the Doctor.  Hilarity ensues.

Inevitable by Chicklet73
Martha explores the TARDIS and catches the Doctor in a moment of reflection.  (That's a pun, btw.) Banter ensues as the Doctor tries to remember that he promised her just one trip.

they are the lanterns (and you are the light) by Livii
A tale of two canons, Leela's departure from televised Who and her later stories in the Gallifrey audios.  But more importantly, a lovely, understated and plausible love story -- about the most unlikely marriage in Doctor Who's history.

A Planet Near Arcturus
by Nostalgia
Ten/Martha fic: she's not staying and he's not going to get attached, so he may as well try out this casual sex thing that people seem so enthusiastic about.

Received Pronunciation by Livii
In which Rose has sex with the Seventh Doctor.  I mean, really, do I need to say more?  Okay, it's not very substantial and I hadn't originally planned to rec it for that reason, but I kept coming back to read it again, and telling my friends to read it, and if that's not a sign of genius, then I don't know what is.

In a Dim Light by Branwyn
Daleks have nightmares about Time Lords. A beautiful, dark fic.

Five Things That Don't Usually Happen When the Doctor and Rose Get It On by Red Scharlach
From excessive euphemisms to an unfortunate side effect of the timegasm.

A Heartwarming Story In Which The Doctor And Romana Make A Baby by Nostalgia
Raising a family is difficult when you have the attention of an ADHD monkey on speed.  Of course, if you have a time machine... This is a very serious story. Very.

Look and Remember by Cadhla
A series of vignettes about the Doctors and their companions -- wearing silly shoes, blowing things up, being chased by aliens.  New school, old school, all part of the Doctor's tapestry.

The Unimaginable Romana by Labingi
What really impressed me about this fic -- aside from the writing and the characterisation -- was how it pulls off something quite difficult, the portrayal of another person's imaginings.  It knows all along that nothing in this story is real; it plays with its unreality; it takes shameless advantage of it.  And it feels very natural.

17 Reasons Why Romana Is Better Than the Doctor by Calapine
I have a weakness for listfic -- properly executed it contains slivers of narrative that are sometimes more tantalising than a whole plate of story.  This one is charming and amusing, with a twist of the knife at the end.

Notes on the Domestification of Birds by Nostalgia
A funny and heart-rending fic where the Doctor has become human, for Rose. So they live in a flat and he works in a supermarket and she has a baby.  It shouldn't work, but it does. Because it strikes all the right notes, because there are plots, because it is almost perfect.  I was working in a supermarket when I read the chapter with the ... oh, read it and you'll know what I mean.  And afterwards, I would go to work half-expecting it to come true.

Madrid, 2052 by Mirielle
The ninth Doctor finds a bubble of time where Romana still exists. A tale of lost moments and Spanish wine.

A Sort of Man by Kate Andrews
What does it mean to change your body and personality? Ten explores his new self and the implications it has for his relationships -- with Rose and the wider universe. Thoughtful, clever and a bit sexy. Ten/Rose.
