iStalk: Doctor Who recs
New-school, old-school, shippy, gen, cracksome; I am flexible like Captain Jack.
Gen
Where Ever I May Roam by Irenak A series of phone calls, text messages and general telephonic harrassment. Hilarious post-"Last of the Time Lords" fic. Goose Chase by Emery Board A short, hilarious fic about Team Torchwood's zany adventures in the Himalayas. Well, not so much of the zany and more of the shivering and bickering, but still: it's funny. Paleolinguistics by Astrogirl2 A short ficlet about the Doctor and language, set during "Sound of Drums". Says a great deal in very few words. Lost Things by Calapine The thing about Calapine is that she never writes a bad fic. This is a tiny gem with dark facets, in which Romana is quite mad and the Doctor is unable to heal her. The Invitation by UKTechgirl Following an adventure involving a hospital on the moon and some rhino aliens, Rose decides to ask the nice med student along for the ride. Funny and clever, with characterisation I wish had happened on screen. A Minor Point of Departure by Calapine In which Martha is temporarily separated from the Doctor, and takes passage on a freighter with a terribly familiar captain. Lovely dialogue and characterisation, and I kind of wish this was canon. The Long Road to Nowhere by Calapine This is labelled as Ten/Martha, but the shipping is subtextual so I'm throwing it in gen. Post "Gridlock", Martha is trying to understand the Doctor, and he shares some pieces of his past. Some sections made me teary and I cheered at the ending. Tea Time Terror for Time Tots by Branwyn The Seventh Doctor writes a book for children. Containing useful advice for future Time Lords, with Branwyn's usual precise twist of the knife in the end. Bad Gods by Calapine AU from "School Reunion" in which the Doctor makes a different choice. Calapine has a knack for combining the intimate with the epic, plot and character and nods to the original series. All This Season of Snow and Sins by CherryIce The Time Agency picks up a temporal terrorist. Romana finds a refuge. An extraordinary fic that combines a plot, characterisation and prose that sings. The Comedie of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by Reina Isabella First drafts are such a pain, especially when you're not sure if you're writing comedy or tragedy. But since the Doctor is prowling around Elsinore, it will probably end up being farce anyway. Then Sleep the Season by CherryIce Romana, last of the Time Lords, and Mickey Smith, her intrepid companion. And the TARDIS, the Doctor's TARDIS, with a mission of its own. Funny and heartbreaking, like the very best fic. Looked Up in Perfect Silence at the Stars by Doyle What if Sarah had gone with the Fourth Doctor to Gallifrey; what if she had not left? The Time War makes everything possible. I love this for the details: Sarah bringing investigative journalism to Gallifreyan politics; Leela keeping to the shadows; Romana striving to win an unwinnable war. Downtime by Cryptile "The Christmas Invasion" ended on Christmas night; "New Earth" picked up in spring. Cryptile fills in the missing time with a well-observed Ten POV. Rose is still coming to terms with his regeneration; Jackie is wary; the Doctor himself is still learning. Doctor Who and the Cake of Finality by Nostalgia and Edithmatilda In which the Fourth Doctor presents Adric with a challenge in the form of cake. Fiction and reality collide, comedy ensues. The Big Blue Box of Powell Estate by Kazzy Adults may not give the anachronistic police box a second glance, but the children notice. And speculate. And the stories build up over time, shifting and warping into something new, but still recognisable. A great outsiders' POV fic. |
