Reasons
Fanwork has been a passion of mine since ... well, since before the word "fan" entered my vocabulary. Was I a fangirl when I daydreamed about new Lady Lovelylocks adventures? When I tried writing a Malory Towers story from Gwendoline's point of view? Um, yes. My adolescent years were marked by desultory attempts at bad fantasy novels, bad science fiction novels and bad Star Trek novels. I encountered fanfic online when I was 15, and everything came together. I've dabbled in various fandoms here and there, but my biggest loves were Star Trek: Voyager (active period: 1997-2001) and Harry Potter (2001-present). Since then, Mary Russell and Doctor Who have become dominant. Oh those zany female characters who are basically the male characters with breasts! I believe that fanfic empowers viewers and readers. I believe it challenges us to think about media culture in new ways. To challenge and criticise and celebrate the stories and characters who have won a place in our hearts. I also believe it's bloody good fun. So there. Can't explain the squid, though. Must be the tentacles.
